The meeting was attended by fifty-five (55) participants, drawn from Federal Ministries of Environment, Power, Labour& Employment, Budget & Economic Planning; representatives of ElectricityGeneration, Transmission & Distribution Companies; Nigerian Customs Service, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Rural Electrification Agency, National Environmental Standards Regulation & Enforcement Agency (NESREA),Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency(NEMSA),Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO),and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO).
The objectives of the workshop were to:
- create awareness about the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) for the Environmentally Sound Management of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Nigeria; and
- inaugurate the Grievance Redress Committee (GRC) across all identified stakeholders.
The GRM’s goal is to promote a formalized and locally based platform for receiving, assessing, and resolving feedback or complaints from project-affected stakeholders, preventing grievances from escalating to unmanageable levels, and providing project-affected individuals with access to grievance resolution procedures related to the social and/or environmental impacts of project deliverables.
